HERBERT WEST - REANIMATOR

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

This horror short story was written between October 1921 and June 1922 and it was first serialized in February through July 1922 in the amateur publication Home Brew. The story is the first to mention Lovecraft's fictional Miskatonic University and is also one of the first depictions of zombies as scientifically reanimated corpses, with animalistic and uncontrollable temperaments.

The story was the basis of the 1985 horror film Re-Animator and its sequels, in addition to numerous other adaptations in various media throughout history.

BOLTON

DATE(S) VISITED: JUN 7, 2019
LOCATION: BOLTON, MA

It was not easy to find a good opening for two doctors in company, but finally the influence of the university secured us a practise in Bolton - a factory town near Arkham, the seat of the college. The Bolton Worsted Mills are the largest in the Miskatonic Valley, and their polygot employees are never popular patients with local physicians. - HPL ~ Herbert West Reanimator

POND STREET COTTAGE

DATE(S) VISITED: JUN 7, 2019
LOCATION: BOLTON, MA

According to The Pnakotic Atlas it gives this location as the house mentioned in the story, although the nearest street with Pond in the name is a little more South East and is named Mill Pond Road. Some more detective work will be done on this location. The house does stand next to the West Burying Ground, this could be a connection to the story perhaps?

The Bolton Worsted Mills are the largest in the Miskatonic Valley, and their polyglot employees are never popular as patients with local physicians. We chose our house with the greatest of care, seizing at last on a rather run-down cottage near the end of Pond Street; five numbers from the closest neighbour, and seperated from the local potter's field by only a stretch of meadow land, bisected by a narrow neck of the rather dense forest which lies to the north. The distance was greater than we wished, but we could get no nearer house without going on the other side of the field, wholly out of the factory district. We were not much displeased, however, since there were no people between us and our sinister source of supplies. The walk was a trifle long, but we could haul our silent specimens undisturbed. - HPL ~ Herbert West Reanimator
