Swamp Thing is a 1982 American superhero film written and directed by Wes Craven, based on the DC Comics character of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland (Ray Wise) who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing (Dick Durock) through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan). Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane. The film did well on home video and cable and was followed by a sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing, in 1989.
CYPRESS GARDENS
DATE(S) VISITED: APR 10, 2022
LOCATION: MONCKS CORNER, SC
The filming of Swamp Thing occurred primarily on location in Cypress Gardens. The preserve covers 170-acres, with the centerpiece of the garden covering 80 acres which includes blackwater bald cypress/tupelo swamp, surrounded with both boat and foot trails.
Whilst walking the trails you could see why this place was chosen for filming to take place. Even though it is difficult to accertain where specific filming shots were done, just to see the sheer beauty and atmosphere was something else.
Cypress Gardens also includes a Swamparium which features native and exotic fish, reptile and amphibian species from swamp habitats, including common local venomous snakes and large aquatic salamanders. There is also a enclosure with some pretty impressive alligators.
